Introducing Niobium

If you want to learn how to work niobium into your jewelry designs this is the class for you. Learn to apply basic metalworking techniques to niobium sheet and wire and colorfully anodize them. Then l turn your new pieces into beautiful, wearable jewelry. Students will learn how to cut, drill, shape, texture, file, and sand niobium sheet and wire; and anodizing techniques.

Kit Includes: 20-gauge un-anodized niobium wire, 18-gauge un-anodized niobium wire, 16-gauge un-anodized niobium wire, 2” x 3” 24-gauge un-anodized niobium sheet, 1” x 2” 28-gauge un-anodized niobium sheet, and a 3M sanding pad

Rainforest Leaves

Learn to cut niobium sheet with metal shears, bend, texture it and then colorfully anodize your created pieces. Add beads with wire and jump rings to suggest falling rain.  Students will learn how to cut, drill, shape, file, and sand niobium sheet and wire; some fold forming techniques; anodizing techniques.

Kit  Includes: 2 pair niobium ear wires, 3″x 3″ 26-gauge un-anodized niobium sheet, 15 5mm jump rings, small package magatama seed beads, and a 3M sanding pad

Painting In The Abstract on Niobium

Monday, February 4, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (includes time for lunch)

Anodic Painting is a unique way of applying color to niobium. You will cut, file and sand niobium sheet to prepare for anodizing. Bath anodizing is used to give your pieces a solid background. Then with special paintbrushes you will paint abstract designs on those shapes. This class is an introduction to anodic painting intended to familiarize you with using the paintbrushes.

Kit includes: 3 inches x 3 inches 24-gauge unanodized niobium sheet, 12 inches 20-gauge unanodized niobium wire, 4 pairs unanodized niobium earwires, 2 small lampwork beads

Texture Talks

Create a lively kinetic pair of earrings that express your uniqueness in color. Cut your shape, texture with hammers and stamps and then anodize with your chosen colors. Add a colorful dangle that you bend, forge and anodize. Attach anodized ear wires and leave class with your own statement earrings.

Floral Trellis

Tuesday, February 5, 1:00 pm -5:00 pm

Cut a shape out of niobium sheet and saw out an interior shape. This frame will be textured with hammer and anodized your chosen colors. With Shrinkets molds, developed by Julie Haymaker, you will create a flower to attach to the frame with wire wrapping. Add dangles and a chain then wear it with pride.

Cut, file and sand a shape to emboss with the Sizzix Big Kick or paint on by anodic painting. Then cut a porthole frame that can be riveted over the scene. The pendant will then be hung on a SilverSilk chain.

Using niobium and fold-forming you will create three or more custom links for your bracelet. You will learn to cut niobium sheet in the shapes of your choice. You will line fold and texture them. Smooth the parts with files and sanding pads to ready your pieces for anodizing with electricity. Then you can express yourself with your favorite colors and connect the parts with niobium jump rings to finish your bracelet.

Kit includes: 1 1/2-inch x 4 inches 24 gauge unanodized niobium sheet, 8 inches 16 gauge unanodized niobium wire, 8mm & 10mm jump rings and 3M sanding pad

You will choose or design a shape to cut out of unanodized niobium sheet. Prepare the shape by filing and smoothing the edges. The Sizzix Big Kick will be used to emboss your shape. Punch holes and anodize the shape with your favorite colors. Create dangles and bead links and finish your necklace with aluminum chain.

Kit includes: 2-inch x 3-inch 24 gauge unanodized niobium sheet, 4 feet 20 gauge unanodized niobium wire, 1 foot 18 gauge unanodized niobium wire, 16 swarovski crystals, 18 inches colored aluminum chain, 3m sanding pad

Open Studio Time

Daily, February 2 – 8, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

This is a perfect opportunity to finish up anything you didn’t complete in class or use up any niobium you have left over. Marti will be available to answer questions and assist you if necessary. You will have access to all of the studio tools. You can register ahead of time or just show up and pay in person.
